Lake Lucerne Boat Trip: Which Cruise Is Worth Your Time?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 5 min read
If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, ride the scheduled boats and skip the booked cruise. If you do not, choose by what you want from the trip: a meal on the water, a city walk with a short cruise, or simply an hour on the lake. The booked options differ more in format than in scenery, so the cheapest sensible choice is usually the right one.
Start with the public boats
The Lake Lucerne Navigation Company, SGV, runs 20 vessels, five of them restored paddle steamers: Uri, Unterwalden, Schiller, Gallia and Stadt Luzern, built between 1901 and 1928. Together they form what Switzerland’s tourist board calls the world’s largest fleet of paddle steamers on an inland lake. The scheduled services call at Weggis, Vitznau, Beckenried, Gersau, Brunnen and, at the far end, Flüelen, which is about three hours and fifteen minutes from Lucerne.
The Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Travel Pass Flex are valid on these scheduled boats. That is a full lake cruise at no extra cost for any pass holder, and it is the strongest argument against booking one separately. Without a pass you pay a normal fare; look at current prices on the SGV timetable page, because the figures that circulate online are often several years old. Our Swiss Travel Pass and tickets page shows the passes available.
What the booked cruises add
The scheduled boat gives you the lake. The booked options add a meal, a guide, or a combination with something else.
| Boat option | Price per person | Reviews | Rating | Listed duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Bürgenstock by ferry and funicular | €66.45 | 140 | 4.3 | 1 day |
| Walking tour with optional 1-hour lake cruise | €76.81 | 167 | 4.8 | 2 to 3.5 hours |
| First-class cruise with 3-course lunch | €126.75 | 417 | 4.3 | 2 hours |
| Guided city tour with 1-hour lake cruise | €134.84 | 1 | 5.0 | 2 to 3 hours |
| Pedalo picnic with breakfast | €172.60 per group of up to 2 | 1 | 5.0 | 1.5 hours |
The most-reviewed boat option here is the lunch cruise, with 417 reviews, but its 4.3 stars is also the lowest score alongside the Bürgenstock ferry. Read recent reviews before you pay €126.75, and remember that the same stretch of water can be sailed on a scheduled boat for much less.
The best-rated option with a real review base is the walking tour with the optional cruise, at 4.8 stars from 167 reviews. It starts at €76.81, but the listing describes the cruise as an option, so check whether the boat is part of the price shown or an extra. It fits a visitor who wants the old town and the lake in one outing and does not want to arrange either.
The Bürgenstock option is the cheapest in the table. It combines a ferry across the lake with a funicular up to Bürgenstock and is listed as a full day. It is the choice if you want a destination, not only a cruise.
The two listings with a single review each, the guided city tour with cruise and the pedalo picnic, may be perfectly good, but one review proves nothing. The pedalo is the odd one out: a small pedal boat for two, priced per group, at breakfast time. It is a romantic idea and an expensive one.
How long is enough?
The lake is long and narrow, and you do not need to see all of it. The time on the water in the listings above is one to two hours. Going all the way to Flüelen takes three hours and fifteen minutes each way, which is a day trip in itself and best treated as a one-way boat ride with a train back.
One example circuit among the scheduled services runs from Lucerne via Tribschen, Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock, Vitznau, Weggis and Meggenhorn and back, in about two hours. That is the shape of a good lake outing: a loop, short enough to combine with a mountain or a museum.
Weather and timing
The lake looks best in clear light, and mountains can disappear in cloud even when the water is calm. If the forecast is mixed, a trip with a city walk or a meal has something to fall back on. The booked cruises are usually fixed in time, so prefer a free-cancellation booking.
Our recommendation
With a pass: go on the scheduled boat, preferably to Vitznau or Weggis, which also brings you to the foot of Rigi. Without a pass and wanting a guide, book the walking tour with the optional cruise. Wanting a meal on board, the first-class lunch cruise is the only listing built for it. The complete range is on our Lake Lucerne cruises page, and walking tours are on the Lucerne walking tours page.
