Mount Rigi from Lucerne: Day Pass, Boat and Railway Combinations
Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read
Rigi is the easiest big mountain day from Lucerne, because the journey is half the point. You cross the lake by boat, ride Europe’s oldest mountain railway to the summit and come down a different way. The decision is not whether to go, but whether to buy the day pass, take a guided version, or use a Swiss Travel Pass and pay nothing extra.
What makes Rigi different
The Vitznau–Rigi railway opened on 21 May 1871 as the first mountain railway in Europe, and Rigi is still called the “Queen of the Mountains”. The summit, Rigi Kulm, is at about 1,800 m, and from Vitznau on the lakeshore the rack railway takes roughly half an hour to reach it. It is a broad, green mountain with views over the lake, rather than a rock peak, and that shapes the day: the ride is the main event.
The classic loop
The standard circuit uses every kind of transport the mountain offers.
- Boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, about an hour.
- Rack railway from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm.
- Free time on the summit.
- Rack railway down to Rigi Kaltbad.
- Cable car from Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis.
- Boat from Weggis back to Lucerne, about 45 minutes.
One published itinerary puts the whole day between six and ten hours, depending on how long you stay on top. Treat the times as indications, because timetables change with the season. You can also skip the boat and take a train from Lucerne to Arth-Goldau, where a second rack railway climbs to the summit.
What the passes and tickets cost
Without a pass, the operator’s standard return ticket to Rigi Kulm from Vitznau is quoted at CHF 84 (2026). The Rigi Day Pass covers unlimited rides on the cogwheel railways from Arth-Goldau and Vitznau and on the cable cars from Weggis and Kräbel. The boat on Lake Lucerne is a separate fare.
The Swiss Travel Pass changes the arithmetic completely. It covers the boat to Weggis with the cable car up to Rigi Kaltbad and the train to Rigi Kulm, the boat to Vitznau with the train to Rigi Kulm, and the train to Arth-Goldau with the train to Rigi Kulm. For a pass holder, a bought day pass duplicates what is already paid for. Check the operator’s conditions for your pass type. Our Swiss Travel Pass and tickets page shows the passes on sale.
The offers on GetYourGuide
| Rigi option | Price per person | Reviews | Rating | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Rigi 4-route rack railway and cable car day pass | €81.55 | 93 | 4.7 | not listed |
| Mount Rigi day trip with cruise and cable car | €133.22 | 94 | 4.7 | 7 hours |
| Boat trip, Mount Rigi train and mineral baths ticket | €171.52 | 97 | 4.7 | not listed |
| Mount Rigi day trip with cruise, cable car and train | €181.23 | 17 | 3.7 | 6 hours |
The day pass is priced close to the operator’s own return ticket, so do not expect a discount for booking it here. The guided day trip costs €51.67 more and adds the lake crossing and a guide who looks after the connections. That has real value on a day with five changes of vehicle, and none if you are happy reading a timetable.
The mineral baths option is the unusual one. Rigi Kaltbad has a mineral bath and spa that, according to its operator, is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, and a day admission is about CHF 41 for adults according to the operator’s 2025 price list. Whether the bath is included in the €171.52 ticket or sold at a bundle price is something to read on the booking page. It makes sense on a cool or rainy day, when the view is not the point.
The lowest-rated listing in the table has 3.7 stars from 17 reviews, while the other three sit at 4.7. Treat that gap as a warning rather than a verdict.
What can go wrong
The view is the product, and the summit can be in cloud. A clear day is the reason to go; the mineral baths at Rigi Kaltbad are the obvious plan B. Check the forecast on the morning.
Second, the connections. Several vehicle changes mean a missed boat can cost an hour. If you are travelling with small children or limited mobility, count the transfers before you pick a route, and confirm accessibility with the operator rather than assuming it.
Who should choose Rigi
Choose Rigi if you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, if you want a relaxed day rather than a high-altitude one, or if you would rather spend the day on the move than at a single summit. If you want snow and a glacier, choose Titlis; if you want the shortest trip from the city, see Pilatus. All three are compared in Pilatus, Rigi or Titlis.
Our recommendation
With a pass, simply go. Without one, buy the Rigi day pass and pay for the boat separately, or choose the guided day trip with cruise and cable car if you want one booking and one meeting point. Other full-day options are on our day trips from Lucerne page.
